G.R.I.T.S. in the Kitchen

December 28, 2009

As the Marketing Coordinator for Impact I sometimes get to do some fun things for the papers and the newest of these is G.R.I.T.S. in the Kitchen! One of the other non-editorial employees and myself have started this country-cooking column that runs in every Wednesday Laurel Impact. We cook recipes submitted by readers and I photograph the steps and preparation. It has turned out to be a lot of fun and is becoming very popular with readers. We also print some great cooking tips that are submitted by readers. If you have some great recipes or tips to share or just enjoy cooking check out the column in the Laurel paper and become a fan on Facebook! Send your recipes and tips to gitk@laurelimpact.com. Here’s one for tonight’s dinner – Poppy Seed Chicken! It is so easy, yet so yummy!

This excerpt from a recent article by a friend/colleague of mine really spoke to me and I thought I would share with you guys.

“Based on the Christmas story, nearly everyone’s perception of Christ is one of a baby that was born into a Roman-controlled world, grew up innocently, and died viciously at the hands of powerful men. After that ostensible disaster the Son of God was raised from the dead by the Heavenly Father and miraculously transported to Heaven about six weeks after the Resurrection. What most do not take time to comprehend is that the whole story was by design. His life was not one that was taken . . . it was His gift to a creation that rebelled against Him. He didn’t have to be born into a family of common Jewish residents in a sandy little village that you wouldn’t even know the name of if He hadn’t arrived there. The tiny boy didn’t have to grow up just to submit to burly Roman soldiers who hammered nails into His hands and mocked Him as He hung dying on the cross. He didn’t have to resist temptation and endure cruelty in this world we exist in so that He might have a human life to give – He carefully designed it that way. It was His gift to you. His gift was not to people who loved Him or had given Him favors. The little life in the manger was a gift to a world that first rejected Him. He didn’t satisfy Himself with retaliation but instead chose to give us a second chance. For Him it was all about us.  For us it should be all about Him. Merry Christmas!”

I hope everyone has a safe and Christ-filled Christmas!

Move that bus! The Heathcock family of Hattiesburg was chosen for an Extreme Makeover and were greeted at their door a couple weeks ago by Ty Pennington and the crew of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The father, Sherman Heathcock, is in the middle of his 2nd deployment to Iraq with the Army National Guard. When home he would work to repair the damage done to his home during Hurricane Katrina. A couple weeks ago he fell through the floor while doing repairs.

Sherman’s wife, Gina, and their 3 children were sent to Disney World for the week. The army allowed Sherman to come home for the show and he met his family in Florida as a surprise!

Last Thursday I was able to attend the reveal and I got in a couple shots of the crazyness. Christian Slater was the celebrity guest for this episode and the crowd shreaked every time he or Ty walked past. I hope you guys enjoy this “behind the scenes” glimpse.

Just an extra bit of funny… The crew guy in the blue Jacket (15 pics from the bottom, Gez that’s alot of pics) is signing Table.. Don’t know if that’s what he was intending, since I wasn’t there & all :( but that is the sign for table.

Just thought that might make you laugh a bit.
